Rajery, Prince de la Valiha

Originally from a village in the north of Madagascar, Antananarivo, and belonging to the Merina ethnic group, Rajery lost the use of the fingers on his right hand at the age of one and soon had to have them amputated. At the age of fifteen, he learnt to play the valiha, the tubular bamboo harp typical of the high plateaux. A songwriter, his songs written in Malagasy describe the daily life of the Malagasy people.
Rajery's playing, which is a far cry from the traditional style, has completely revamped the instrument's repertoire.
This will be the second time we welcome Rajery! He came at the very beginning of our project in 2016. Proceeds from the concert will go to the association that Rajery runs in his Madagascan village.
