The epic tale of Balla Dieri originates from the Toucouleur community, which lives along the River Senegal and has traditionally relied on fishing and agriculture. Yet the river is receding, many species of fish have disappeared, and the art of river fishing can no longer be passed on to the younger generation. Thierno explores the difficulty of being both welcomed and rejected. He speaks to us of the weight of society on individual choices, of the younger generations’ desire for change, and of love that transcends borders...
