James, a travelling penguin from the South Pole, and Vladimir, a funny bear from the North Pole, meet on the Arctic ice floe. As apprentice astronomers, they wonder why night is so long at the Earth's two poles. Their questions lead them to adopt a scientific approach, putting forward hypotheses and testing them. By building an observatory and a spaceship, they will be able to study the planets in greater depth. Their journey will take them into the orbits of the Earth, Mars and Saturn, enabling them to understand that, while the planets have things in common, they also have differences.
